Fuel from used cooking fat.

Richmond Council in the UK are converting all their fleet to run from used cooking oil. Once completed this will make Richmond the first fully eco friendly fleet, with all their service vehicles, buses and refuse vehicles running on 100% recycled cooking oil.

It can be done... how long will it take for the rest to follow suit?

I thought there were some nasty byproducts from doing that, how do they make it save to use cooking fat?

I remember listening to a piece on BBC Radio 4 about it, it was a few months ago so I don't recall the details now.
