Imitating photosynthesis process

One idea of producing biofuels is imitating the photosynthesis process. In the photosynthesis, plants trap sunlight energy, absorb carbon dioxide and water and convert them into electrochemical energy. Scientist want to imitate the process to producing clean and green fuels. If the research is successful, we can produce fuels from carbon dioxide and water (with the help of sunlight).
Do you think it is possible?

Re: Imitating photosynthesis process

When I still a child, I even had a desire to invent the method of photosynthesis process imitating (I thought it's possible and not that difficult ) I thought it's good if we can produce our own food without relying on plants. We will let the plants grow just for decorative and environmental purposes.

Re: Imitating photosynthesis process

I really don't understand the process enough to predict how likely a successful development of it would be, but I was wondering - Is it assumed that this would be more efficient than the solar panels that we already have?

Re: Imitating photosynthesis process

Well, that's a good question, but difficult to answer. The problem is that both conversion produce different outputs. Solar panels convert energy of sun to electrical energy, while photosynthesis process convert it to (electro)chemical energy ->producing biofuels. electrical energy and energy of biofuel serve differents purposes.
