Bamboo flooring

I think it is a good alternative flooring if we want to build an eco-friendly house. Bamboo is easy and fast to grow, compared to hardwood trees. So, bamboo is much more "renewable" than hardwood trees. Yet, we need to carefully choose the best products. Your floors require a significant investment, so inferior quality is not worth the risk. Some key features to consider are : performance, environmentally friendly finishes and adhesives, milling and moisture control, grading, durable finish and longevity.

Re: Bamboo flooring

I've seen bamboo floor products in the store, but I don't think I've ever seen them installed in a home.

I think if you were in a condo or other place with potential noise issues, you'd want to carefully choose an appropriate underlay. You may also consider cork flooring for similar reasons that you'd look into bamboo.

Re: Bamboo flooring

Do you use a specific kind of underlay when installing bamboo floors, or is it the same as for hardwood?

I know that we had to get our condo board to approve the underlay we used because of noise considerations.

Re: Bamboo flooring

The same as most hardwood. There are different noise barriers that you can install but they are the same as most of the others that you would use for hardwood.

Re: Bamboo flooring

Bamboo is such an abundant and versatile product I'm really surprised it isn't used more often. I personally love how it looks.

I've seen bamboo flooring in the stores in displays, but I don't think I've ever seen it installed in a home.

I think it tends to be less expensive than engineered hardwood as well, doesn't it?

We're planning more renovations in the next few months, so I'll be keeping an eye open for what's available.
