Porous paving

Porous paving is aimed to allows rainwater to infiltrate into the ground. This can help recharge underlying aquifers and reduces peak flows and flooding. That means that streams flow more consistently and at cooler temperatures, contributing to healthy ecosystems. Porous paving also contributes to healthy trees along streets and in parking lots.

Although some porous pavement types are not new, pavements that are engineered to allow infiltration while also withstanding regular vehicle use are a more recent innovation.

Re: Porous paving

I wonder about durability and longevity with porous pavements. If you allow sunlight and water to penetrate any paved surface for too long, it tends not to last for too long. Maybe certain flood areas could benefit from this type of product but being used on major roadways... I'm still a little skeptical.

Re: Porous paving

That's good point.
I think the porous paving doesn't only keep the surrounding place from being flooded, but also allow the rain water to infiltrate so that help the local water availability a bit. For its durability, well, I also concern about that.

Re: Porous paving

If water management is the concern than porous paving is an ok idea but... Porous Paving has it's draw backs. The biggest of which is the release of harmful chemicals into the natural water system which at some point will re enter your own drinking supply. Paving your driveway with such a system is a good idea so long as the run off is collected in a personal rainwater cistern to use for warm weather irrigation of crops or yards. But one must be carefull to maintain their vehicle to restrict the amounts of petro chemicals released into the water and thus the environment.

Re: Porous paving

I wonder if porous paving would work well where there are extreme temperatures that change quickly. For example if there's a heavy rain and the temperature turns to freezing, would the water in the porous material expand and damage it?
