What about bamboo?

I know it is not new. It is even older than most of us. But bamboo is definitely green, cheap and renewable.
Being a giant grass, bamboo is the fastest growing plant. Some species grow 4 feet a day! Bamboo can be harvested in 7 years, much faster than hardwoods which are usually harvested in 35 - 50 years. It also yield up to 20 times more than wood.
Bamboo is durable, resilient and long-lasting, exceeding the strength of construction wood by several time.

Re: What about bamboo?

I think bamboo is a good alternative of building materials, especially to replace woods which is much less available now. The only drawback is its durability. Bamboos should be treated properly using a safe preservative to get them having longer useful life.

Bamboo is a good material for furniture. In my place also bamboo is widely used, especially the black ones named "wulung" in our local language (I don't know what it is in English) for its artistic color and durability.

Re: What about bamboo?

Bamboo is a great product but not just for building. The fibers of bamboo are great for making cloth as well. the upsides to bamboo are numerous starting first at the fact that it grows as fast as it does, second that it has no known disease or insects that harm it, and third that it is Hypoallergenic in that is doesn't allow for toxins to become impregnated in the fibers. Bamboo is also a very hard substance and can withstand a lot of wear and tear which makes it great as a flooring surface. I recomend it to everyone I consult with when discussing new material options in remodels.
