Use non-toxic art supplies.

Many paints and art products use asthma-inducing chemicals. Let your little artiste make masterpieces with non-toxic supplies like veggie-based paint for art projects. Be sure to pick supplies that don't contain ammonia, formaldehyde, or turpentine, especially since most supplies will end up in your kids' mouths. Whether or not your kid's a 'natural', natural art supplies will get them off to a great start.

Here is a great place to find what you need for eco-friendly art supplies:

that is a great tip there...we do not realise it but many chemicals in the paint act as slow poisons and can even cause cancer....

This is a good tip for everyone.. Not just the little ones. Although I suppose adults are slightly less likely to eat the art materials. :P:
