Is biodiversity really important?

Biodiversity, or the variety of life on the Earth, is it really important?
Well, I believe that every species, no matter how small, is created for some reason. It plays an important role to help the ecosystem possesing the ability to prevent and recover from various disasters. We are also benefited because the larger number of species of plants means more variety of crops.
What do you think?

...and mosquitoes without humans  So, lizards' life depends on us. I am happy that despite our greediness and irresponsibility, at least we play an important role in conserving lizards, the legacy of dinosaurs ages :)

Yeah, we seems to be the last in the chain of food, while we are actually not. We are not carnivorous (or omnivorous) by nature. Human physiology, bodily functions and digestive system seems to be similar with herbivorous animals', especially the granivorous (grain eater) ones'.

Re: Is biodiversity really important?

In the relm of Biodiversity humans play an almost stagering roll and yet we know very little about the total effects of our actions. Is Biodiversity really important? Yes. From the simple protozoa to the Harpy Eagle biodiversity is extremely important. One missing link will put all of the others out of wack until another comes along to take the missing ones place. Also because of biodiversity we as Humans can better guage the state of the planet and the toxicity levels of our environment through observing other species of plant animal and bird.

Of course! Just in my own opinion, I think one of nature's defining characteristics is its complexity. To maintain a healthy biosphere, I imagine you'd need all the complicated ties that everything has to everything else. It's what spurs growth and change and evolution (if you believe in it), and one of my favourite things about life.

Re: Is biodiversity really important?

It's definitely important and it's part of our existence. I figure if that's how God made the universe, than that's how it should be. There's a reason for everything, whether we understand it or not.
