5 low cost ($5.00 or less) ways to go Green

The following is a list of things that you can do to go "Green" that cost $5.00 or less. This does not include initial out put for multiple use Items. You can factor those costs in if you like but over all I think you'll find that you'd probably buy these items anyway if you haven't already.

1. Use cloth bags to carry your groceries and other store purchases home.-- While the cost on the outset might be up to $15.00 you will make that up in three trips to the store for your groceries per bag so if you spend 45 for 3 bags and use each bag every time then 3 visits is all it takes. After that you're keeping plastic out of the waste stream and your doing it for free. If you haven't got $45 dollars to spend at one time try just one bag...

2. Get your Carry out in re-useable containers you bring in yourself-- When you call in to your favorite carry out place tell them you will be bringing your own containers and that you would like to have your carry out placed in them, (even if you have to wait a few extra minutes) Do this for "Doggie Bags" as well. when asked if you want a box say "No thank you, I brought my own."

3. Carpool, ride public transportation, walk or ride a bike--- Car pooling can be a great way for co-workers to get to know eachother or for neighbors. Public transportation allows you to meet new people and can get you most anywhere you need to go if you plan ahead. Walking or biking is not only great for the earth but it is also good for you. There are a lot of different opinions as to what you should walk to and what you should ride to my "opinion" do what you are comfortable with until you are ready to go further.

4.Wash your laundry in cold. The fact is detergents nowdays are formulated to work in hot warm or cold. Many old time detergents like Borax or standard Castile soap work just fine in cold as well.

5. Join a stream team or preservation group.--Just by simply being involved in community beautification projects you are making a huge difference in the environment and your own community and it doesn't cost you a dime just a couple hours in front of the Television.

Thanks Urban Forager.. some simple ideas here, that anyone can do with little or no effort...

You don't have to do BIG things... If thousands of people did one small thing it would have as big an impact as one person doing lots.

the ideas are indeed simple and easy to execute and I already do most of them except the one about using re-useable containers for carry out....yes a good idea indeed...but I am not sure if the restaurants etc. will oblige...will have to practically see if they do the next time I get something from them....

More people would use public transport if it was frequent, reliable and affordable. Until that is sorted out it will be very hard for people to leave their cars behind.

That's really true, Deltic. I've never a bus stop that was in reasonable distance of my home and my work, so using the bus just wasn't an option for me. It's just too far of a walk in all directions.

I travel to see elderly family members several times per year, it is about 200 miles each way. The standard train fare is £169.00 (return) for one person, but it costs me about £55 for five people to do the return journey by car. I would prefer to go by train, I look out for special deals and go by train when I can, but I just can't afford the standard prices.

There is another piece of this pie for me. We finally have a sort of metro rail but again, it's no where near my home or where I worked. However, it's just not the safest thing. There's no money in the fund to make sure that the rails are safely patroled. It's risky, especially if you are alone.

I see what you mean Orrymain, half hearted attempts to encourage people to be green are pointless. Even those of us who really want to make an effort will not put ourselves in danger and most of us have limited finances so it has to be affordable and practical too.

You've got it, Deltic. We've had people stabbed and killed on the metro, including one of the guards who was around. If I can't feel safe, I'm not going to use it.

I've always used the cold setting on my washer and the clothes get clean just fine. If the clothes get a little dingy, I throw in a handful of baking soda. The baking soda also works if the clothes are a bit  "stinky".
