We have a highway program wherein different groups will "adopt" a bit of the highway and pick up trash, cut the brush, whatever's needed. Churches, fraternal groups, all kinds of organizations pitch in.

I was just thinking about possibily trying to twin or pair your town with one that is further along in terms of recycling and green issues. It gould give a lot of advice and encouragement.

Orry, that's too bad, especially since recycling will save them money in the long run. Sometimes I think that local government tries this because they don't want recycling, that perhaps it threatens something that makes them money.

Unfortunately when local councils have their grants cut by Government, they look for things to cut back on.. recycling is an easy target, because imagine the uproar if it was schooling or policing that's cut?

That is a shame Orrymain. How often will the pick ups happen? I guess we are lucky with our collections, we have a fortnightly cycle, one week they take the plastic and glass, the next they take paper, cardboard and garden waste. Could a group of neighbours get together to take the recycling to the nearest recycling station.

it's the same cycle for us Deltic, although there is a recycling centre quite near me, and also our local supermarket has a number of depositories for everything including shoes and textiles in the car park...

Our recycling centre is not far away, they take almost anything. I have neighbours who don't drive so I take a load of stuff for recycling about once per month, it seems more worthwhile to take a full car than just to take my own things.
