Green Christmas Trees

A company in the UK have launched a service where they will deliver a sustainably sourced live tree to your door, in it's own special roots system, so all you do is water it to keep it alive...

at the end of the season, they come and take it back and re plant it... you can even label it, and get the same tree again the following year..

Another company will, for each sustainably sourced tree sold, plant another in the 'Forests For Food' project in Ethiopia via Tree Aid. You can also get Holly and Mistletoe.

those are very cool ideas indeed stav...something that we can all do..as it is not much of an effort on our part...really commendable.

Re: Green Christmas Trees

i thought it was a really clever idea... and i've found that one of them is based in London, so that's how I'm going to get my tree this year.

Be rather fun to get it back again next year and see how much it's grown!

Re: Green Christmas Trees

It is a nice idea, but I am not so sure how green it is. If you have an artificial tree and use the same tree year after year as I do it is probably less wasteful of resources. I did try a rooted tree once, but it died after Christmas when it went back outside.

Re: Green Christmas Trees

I think most people have real trees on christmas rather than the artificial ones deltic and for them atleast their is this option of letting the tree live even after the celebrations are over...most would not mind having your very own personalised tree every christmas...

I guess it depends where you live. In England artificial trees are more common especually among people wo have pets (like me) as dried pine needles get everywhere and are very sharp. Even rooted trees die off because it is too hot for them inside and keeping them well watered is not enough. Trees don't like to be dug up, put in a hot environment then shoved back out in the cold, I doubt that many trees would last beyond the first Christmas. I think it is a nice idea, and if it meets a need that is fine, but I don't think it is especially green. When you take everything into account it is probably just as green to buy a real tree then when it is dead take it to your local recycling centre to be composted. By the way a lot of real trees sold in UK are imported so there is a lot of transport to be taken into account when comparing the environmental impact with an artificial tree.

Re: Green Christmas Trees

The trees from both these websites are grown in the UK Deltic, and the rooted ones come in their own pots already protected... you just water them and feed them their nutrients (supplied with the tree)

both places plant a new tree for each one sold as well.... the second site plants it in Ethiopia, where god knows thy need all t he help they can get...

I don't like plastic trees... they symbolise everything i hate about our artifical lives...

Re: Green Christmas Trees

I suppose stav...we have to look at the good intention behind deltic's opting for an artificial tree...I agree with the fact that as in her place it is difficult to sustain a live tree...for environment's sake atleast they are using an artificial one...
on the other hand...the your case you are opting for the best possible solution again for environment sake with the live rooted tree...
I appreciate both the efforts...atleast the will to think of the envirnment shines...wherever and whatever way you do it..:)

Re: Green Christmas Trees

I like the idea of planting something in Etheopia, I assume it would be something better suited to that environment than a pine tree. As Stav said they need all the help they can get. I hope it is something that has long term support to make it sustainable, I have heard of similar schemes that failed because the tree once planted was not protected or tended.

As for artificial v real, I think it is good that we actually think these things through. In so many situations there are 'shades of grey' it is not as simple as one thing being good and one being bad, it depends on so many variables.
