Urban_Foragers Dumpster Dive Finds

Ok, I have stated in several posts that I am a dumpster diver (sometimes refered to as a freegan). I thought that I would make a thread to tell people what I find on my excursions. I am doing this not to brag but to raise awareness of the wastefulness of our societies. No matter what country you live in there are always going to be things that get thrown away before their usefulness is gone my goal is to show some of that in my dumpster dive finds.

Let it be known now that I dive to combat the excessive waste created at the commercial level. The waste that our consumerism produces. And as a result I only Dive in Retail Dumpsters although there are a ton of things to be found in apt dumpsters as well.

In the past I have found-- Dog kennels, a lamp, a fountain, patio furniture, coffee cups, a cd radio, a set of computer speakers, a keyboard for a computer, paper, printing labels, and a coffee maker... This of course is a short list of the non edibles that I have found. All of these things were ***BRAND NEW***.

Edibles that I have found include $300+ in designer Chocolates (lindt, girradelli) 3 bottles of wine (drank one, it was really good) lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, bagels, doughnuts, soda, bread, flowers, potatoes, celery, apples, oranges, pears, cheese, eggplant, eggs, meat (though I never bring it home much of it is still very good). And the list goes on.

Last night I went out and found a doggy outfit (why people dress their dogs in hats and stuff is beyond me... to each their own.) a set of Ipod head phones, 20+ ten packs of Sugar Babies candy 8 4 packs of tic-tac style breath mints a can of fancy feast cat food and energy tea. It really was a lousy night. That and I was avoiding police all night because I have expired tags on my car. I just cant afford to pay the taxes and get the new tags.. (Dumpster Diving isn't illegal so I'm not worried about them for that. Infact I will share what I find with them. LOL)

So as I said I will post a sampling of the things I find. I hope you enjoy reading it and I hope it makes you think about the waste we create when we don't consume. Where does it end? How do we stop it? I don't know but as long as retail stores are throwing away perfectly good food or products I will be digging it out and using it.

Please feel free to comment and ask questions if you have them.

Re: Urban_Foragers Dumpster Dive Finds

It is fascinating what you can find if you have the nerve to go and hunt it out. Look forward to reading more.

I am a terrible hoarder and never throw anything away so my house is full of clutter. But when i do clear it out (i get the urge every now and then) I take the whole lot to my local charity shop, where they can make some money for it. I can't be bothered with ebay, or i'd sell it all myself!

Hey Urban_Forager, do you ever have concerns about something being contaminated, and do you have a precaution against it?

For example, I'll take refundable beer and wine empties from the container in our condo building, and I rinse them in water. I think if they're in the garbage, chances are they could come in contact with something nasty.

Also a friend of mine works construction and finds himself in neighborhoods very early in the morning. On some garbage days in the higher end areas, he's done quite well. I think he's picked up a good set of golf clubs once, to name just one score.

Re: Urban_Foragers Dumpster Dive Finds

Tag,

Contamination is always a concern, whether found in a dumpster or other wise. When I pull out an apple I bring it home and wash it. when I pull out a bottle of wine I do the same. Eggs cant really be washed but they can be cooked. First rule of thumb watch for spoilage, open containers, and Chemicals. In Many cases everything you find will still be fine but if you pick something off of the bottom of a dumpster and it's sitting in a puddle of mystery juice it needs to be washed, and Washed again. In the places I dive food is never(rarely) in contact with dangerous chemicals.

I don't worry too much after all the produce I buy from a grocery store comes from a farm (ie. the ground) where it's sprayed with chemicals, absorbs oil from the farm equipment that drives over it and is subject to vermin, disease and other things anyway. So when I dive at a store that only sales organic I know that I am getting a better product out of the dumpster than I can usually buy at a normal grocery store. Common sense must take president if your not sure if it's good leave it there. I always have my wife look over the things I bring home so that I have a second set of eyes.

Nasty, Tag, is all in the mind of the person doing it. I know of people who dive bare foot. Nothing is nasty to them. but yes I agree.

Re: Urban_Foragers Dumpster Dive Finds

I like to patronise our local thrift store. In our town there are alot of well-off people who apparently shop for clothes and then give them away, either new or very very gently used. I have gotten loads of really good things from there, especially baby and kid's clothes.
This last weekend, though, I might have made the biggest score yet. I found a pair of Birkenstocks that, if they'd been worn, was maybe once. They fit like a glove, and I paid $9.99 for them. I went online to do a bit of research, and found out that they have a list price of over one hundred dollars! :HAHA:
Before that, I found a pair of Land's End catalogue Mary Jane shoes that retailed for about eighty dollars. They had a bit of minor scuffing that I covered with polish.
I can save incredible bucks there every time I go.

I don't think dumpster diving is for the squeamish... hubby would faint at the sight of an ant on his plate for instance... but i can see how you could do pretty welll if you had the time and inclination, and nerves of steel....

Yes, nerves of steel is what it would take, I agree...
BTW, I hope all you dumpster divers are up on your tetanus injections. Should you get a puncture wound (which would seem to me highly likely) it could get quite nasty for you. Also, carrying around a little bottle of alcohol and/or hydrogen peroxide to pour on any wound ASAP could be quite helpful.

lol Urban Forager.. the mind boggles.. can i ask how you managed to shoot yourself? I would assume regarding punctures etc, that you would likely be wearing heavy gloves as a protection..

I was building stairs to my basement and a new wall. When I was putting the last nail in the wall my nail gun double fired and on the recoil hit my hand instead of the 2x4... so fun.

As for diving yeah I wear gloves...so that I can dig through the Crud with out slimy stuff getting all over me.
