Underwater tidal turbines

Their rotors are propelled by tidal currents instead of wind. The largest test of this new type of power production is under way in New York City's East River, with six 35-kilowatt turbines scheduled to be installed in a channel. As the 16-ft.-dia. rotors spin they'll provide power to a supermarket and a parking garage. Virginia-based Verdant Power hopes to add hundreds more turbines, potentially reaching a total capacity of as much as 10 megawatts — enough to power 4000 homes. The test should answer real-world questions, such as whether the rotors will become encumbered by barnacles. But with researchers estimating that our rivers and estuaries could provide up to 130,000 gigawatt-hours per year — about half the yearly production of the country's dams — it's only a matter of time before major energy utilities begin testing the waters.

Re: Underwater tidal turbines

That sounds like a great idea. I've never heard of that before.

There's an area near where I live that's the subject of controversy because some wind turbines are being considered for use.

The area is near Lake Ontario, but I'm not aware of what currents there would be in the area. I guess that rivers are more useful for this?

That's a great idea. I guess producing electric power using tidal turbines will be more efficient than it using conventional dams. At least, we don't need to build dams. I just wonder how much it will disturb the ecological system in the river they are located.

Work is progressing on the wave generators for ocean use. This new generator isn't as high and noticeable as earlier ones. Hopefully we will be seeing more of these in the near future. The incredible power of the oceans, everywhere; if we can harness even a little bit, what alot of energy that would be.

Re: Underwater tidal turbines

Last year the city of St. Louis and the state of Illinois were discussing building a new bridge across the Mississippi river. I mentioned to my wife that if they were to place 2 or three of these turbines in tandem in the abutments of the bridge they could generate power for part of the city or the sports venues. On top of that I considered that in combination with the tidal generators the designers should incorporate wind turbines at the top of the bridge to capitalize on the natural wind currents that occur over bodies of water like rivers... Good environmental stewardship stems from better design. Making a bridge that combined a multitude of natural renewable energy resources would be one example of better design. Just a thought.
