Hello to all

Hello everyone. My wife & I live in the suburbs of Philadlephia, PA, but we now have a second home down in Henderson County between Hendersonville & Bat Cave. It has been my goal to make a major life change & finally we are throwing in the towel on the rat race here in the northeastern megalopolis & seeking a slower, quieter & simpler lifestyle where we can be closer to nature & the earth. I am a casualty of the economic meltdown & am unemployed, which has given me time to reflect on what really is important as opposed to what others have led me to believe was important. My instincts are pointing the way in no uncertain terms. We have had it with the corporate world, the consumer driven society around us, & the greedy SOBs that care only for maintining the status quo as well as their self inflated egos.

I started camping & then backpacking about 36 years ago. Over the years I spent more & more time alone in the woods seeking spirtual solace & answers to my troubled mind. Nature always seemed to be able to cure me of my worries as well as to help me shed the false comforts those around me seemed addicted to. Things like new cars, new techno toys, shopping at the mall or visiting a casino never appealed to me. Rather I found my greatest peace walking along a remote wilderness trail, acting in harmony with the timetable set by nature & not by clocks. Peace was lying in a warm sleeping bag in a cozy two person tent lit by the warm glow of a candle lantern while the sound of rain drops beating on the tent roof soothed and relaxed me. Feeling the wind gusts on a high peak after an arduous trek to the summit, hearing the thunder echo through the mountain valleys, or smelling the scent of wild ferns mingled with pine needles was like nirvana for me.

Now at fifty years of age, I am hoping that we can sell our too large house up here & move down to North Carolina and start to live a more sustainable life style. The home we bought is three years old & seems to be well insulated & is only 1400 square feet, so at least we have a foundation to start with. We are looking into solar & reintroducing native flora to our land. We also would like to plant a vegetable garden so most of the vegetables we eat will be local, pesticide free, & will not need to be trucked or flown into the big supermarket. We recycle everything possible and try not to run the air conditioners or leave unecessary lights on. We also use compact flourescent bulbs. It is small steps from us all that will add up to a mass conciousness that the Earth is a sacred place, the only home we have, and that technology is not going to save our never ending mistakes as a society. If enough folks make the effort to downsize, respect the Earth, be cognizant of what is going on and adapt new strategies and TALK about it, then perhaps we will recover from the downward spiral that this planet is undergoing day to day. We look forward to rational debate and also a sense of community where respect for this precious garden we call Earth is central.

Thanks.

Re: Hello to all

Hi Stav. No Batmobile. That would use up WAY too much fuel!!! Maybe the Batmobile can be made into a hybrid!!!

We did find that an odd name for a town, by the way, but now know that the cave there, protected by the Nature Conservancy, harbors and shelters bats that are benneficial in their voracious consumption of mosquitoes. Just goes to prove that every species has a role...bats are natural pesticides! last I heard there was a disease going around that was causing bats to wake up from their hiberantions prematurely and then, as it was still winter, they were dying since there were no bugs at that early part of the year. Wonder what caused them to be stricken by this disease. Another mystery to add to the plight of Honey Bees which also have seen a precipitous decline in numbers. Global warming...too many herbicides and pesticides...loss of habitat??? These are the realities we all need to consider as we observe the changes we are living witness to.

I agree with you with one exception. What role do ticks have in our eco system? I rarely use the work hate but.. I hate ticks!
It's a personal thing.

Anyway, welcome to the forum!

Re: Hello to all

Howdy Brass Monkey. I agree...there are a few insects that, at face value, seem to serve no purpose other than to cause us grief...mosquitoes, ticks, and as a rule all other parasites. Nevertheless, they are all probably food for some other critter like birds, spiders, frogs, etc...

Sadly it is what we don't know, nor understand, that has allowed us to so badly F up the planet already. We seem to think we know best and can play God whenever we decide to introduce a non-native species or plant to a new area. Then we find that it has no predator and takes over the existing species and becomes an invasive mennace. Everything that creeps, crawls, flies and otherwise grows on this great green orb has a purpose...even though we cannot initially fathom what that may be. The web is more infinitely interconnected than we have yet to figure out. I say live & let live...unless a tick is attached to my body...then it's death to the little imp.

I recently was told some good friends of ours that moved from New Jersey to Rutherford County killed a Copperhead snake on their property beacuse it was percieved to be a "threat" to their domesticated cat...which they let loose in their twenty one acres of land. I was angry and sad to think that they chose to kill this animal when they could have tried to move it somewhere with a long stick. I understand that they love their kitty...but the snake is a native species, serves a valid purpose removing varmints that otherwise might raid their vegetable gardens, and was not exactly out hunting for cats. They should either keep the kitty in the house, or if not, have made a more rational decision to try to remove the threat!

Re: Hello to all

I can relate BrassMonkey... my pet hate is FLIES... especially the horrid buzzing dirty bluebottle kind... *shudders*

I see no reason for their existence, except perhaps as food for spiders.. i LOVE spiders, they eat flies....... did i mention i HATE flies?

Re: Hello to all

Welcome Wholewheat. Glad to see you on the forum. If your interested in knowing what is killing the gray bats and the small brown bats all up and down the east coast check into White Nose Syndrome. Though it is not the official cause of the problem many of the leading scientists who are studying the problem believe that rests in the "white nose" that many of the dead bats have presented with.

The White nose is a fungal growth but I can't go into much more detail than that because I haven't read up on it lately to keep it fresh in my mind. (I tend to be a goldfish swimming around in a fish bowl, I tend to be a goldfish swimming around in a fish bowl.)

Welcome Wholewheat!

Re: Hello to all

Hi Urban Forager,

Thanks for the info. I knew that I had seen something on the news regarding the problems bats were facing. It amazes me that there seems to be more and more signs that native creatures are being afflicted with "mysterious" diseases and/or parasites. The more I see and hear of the general status of all living creatures being threatened from all sides, the sadder and angrier I become. I truly worry when I hear that so many species, by some counts up to fifty percent, may become extinct in the next few decades. What a waste of life and of the gifts that have been present on this earth for so long.

We need, as a society, to step up to the plate now to restrict building over every available acre in the name of the almighty dollar, we need to restrict the use of pesticides and fertilizers, and we need a government with some balls to say enough is enough and mandate extremly high efficiency standards for vehicles, appliances, and buildings. In my book, the gifts of nature, the sight of butterflies filling a wild meadow, the smell of wildflowers, the feeling of cool breezes on a mountain summit, and the sound of the wind and the water are more than worth the material stuff that is alwyas shoved down our throats goading us to earn ever more so we can acquire ever more stuff.

I believe we need a revolution...a green one, but worry that the majority of complacent sheep are much too busy grazing on American Idol or Death Match fighting in steel cages. What a waste!
