Bright Lights, Green City in Los Angeles

In Los Angeles, public lighting will help guide the green revolution in the United States. The Los Angeles mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa, and former president Bill Clinton embarked on the city’s ambitious plan of green lighting - the first of the kind in the United States.

140,000 standard lamp bulbs and traffic lights will be replaced with LED lights. The city’s mayor declared “This program is the most ambitious in the world ever undertaken by a city. This should reduce our carbon gas emissions by approximately 40,500 tons a year, which is equivalent to withdrawing 6,000 cars from circulation.”

Mayor Villaraigosa wants to make the city of Los Angeles “the cleanest and greenest city in the United States.” The long-term objective is for Los Angeles to reach a 20 percent share of renewable energies in its total consumption by 2010, and 35 percent by 2020.

Among the ecological advantages of light-emitting diode(LED) lighting is having a power consumption that is almost ten times less than the average incandescent light bulbs. Along with needing consuming far less power, the LED bulbs have a typical lifespan 20 to 40 times longer than standard incandescent light bulbs. With energy usage reduced by 65 million kWh, engineers expect a drop in consumption charges for the city to be a minimum 40 percent.

That sounds like a great program, and I'm sure the city and state of California would welcome any money saved on lighting.

Also, there will be lots of publicity for the change, which should prompt other areas to consider a similar switch to green lighting.

Re: Bright Lights, Green City in Los Angeles

I am a native Angeleno, who returns every so often to see family. The lights that LA did have were *orange* and the light reminded me of the hottest night of the year. I couldn't stand them!!!I am glad to know that there is new lighting now. I am probably going to LA sometime this month and I hope to see a great improvement over the old...

I keep hearing about California's growing financial problem - That it will soon be paying people with IOUs.

Does anyone here know if that situation will affect the lighting program, or is it already fully in place?

Have you heard about the great green project in Pharmaka Art Gallery LA? The gallery has been equipped with only LED-lights by Greentorch and is thereby setting a great example and saving a lot of money:)
