Drive 5 miles less each week

Our government have started a TV advertising campaign telling us that driving just 5 miles less a week would make a big difference to CO2 emmissions, if we all did it..

DO you think initiatives like this are a good way to get everyone doing some little thing or is the government shirking it';s responsibility to do something, by shifting it all onto us?

As long as that is not the only thing the government is doing to show its concern about the climate change...I don't think it is a bad idea...huge efforts need the involvement of every individual...if they are introducing sticter industiral restrictions etc....then as citizens...people to can be a part of the change by doing something simple like driving 5 miles less a week...
yes...but do hope more is happening in the government circle than just this...

Re: Drive 5 miles less each week

The UK is one of the countries making a real effort to combat climte change, and there have been many measures put in place to assist...

we are doing a lot.. but not enough, and yet it is a lot more than many countries are doing.

Re: Drive 5 miles less each week

that is absolutely true stav....other countries should take example and follow...this things like driving 5 miles less are simple ideas to follow anywhere u live in the world...

I read in the paper today that a local school in my city has made saturday no vehicle day...students and faculty memebers are asked to walk or take a bicycle ride to school on saturdays...to reduce gas emissions...

that's a good idea, although getting our schools to open on a Saturday just so kids can go to school on foot seems a bit drastic!

Re: Drive 5 miles less each week

I think the message to drive five miles less is a good one, but the way it is delivered is patronising and it alienates people (the same with the healthy eating message). I try to plan all my errands in one trip (the ones that really need the car) that saves a lot of miles per week and it saves me money. I walk whenever possible, unfortunately the bus is too inconvenient and too expensive to use it often.

Re: Drive 5 miles less each week

We have had lots of campaigns in schools to get people walking to school. The school that my daughters went to was the first in UK to introduce US style school buses, that helped to cut out a lot of car journeys.

school buses would make a dramatic improvement in london.. where the rush hour now starts at 7am and carries on till almost 11am.... all those mothers in SUVs taking their little precious to school... and car pooling has never taken off here... which is a shame..

when i was little... we walked a mile each way every day... rain or shine...

Re: Drive 5 miles less each week

here most kids go to school in buses that are marked yellow for people to realise hat those are school buses....I think atleast schools can have such systems rather than parents dropping the kids..
