Get up to $4,500 for your old gas guzzling car or truck!

It's called Cash for Clunkers and it works like this: cars or trucks getting less than 18 miles per gallon, owned, registered and insured for at least a year, and from 1984 model years and later can be traded in for up to $4,500 when they purchase a new fuel efficient car. The dealer will pay the owner $3,500 if the new car gets between 4 and 10 more miles per gallon or $4,500 if the new car gets 10 or more miles per gallon. The dealer then is required to scrap the old car and will be reimbursed by the federal government.

complete details are available at a new government web site set up for the program at cars.gov, and at the web site for the National Automotive Dealers Association.

I think that's a good incentive. I suspect there will be a number of people still hanging on to their clunkers if they're still running because of the cost involved with the new vehicle, even with the rebate.

That's got to be a step in the right direction though.

well in the UK it seems to have kick started the dormant car sales business.... people taking advantage of the big discount while they have the chance, and atthe same time it replaces pollutants with more eco-friendly vehicles.... everybody wins.. (even shortfuses  )

Stay, that's funny. That rebate is going to come back to us Americans in the form of a tax,I pay enough in taxes already. I own shares in Government Motors (GM) already, thru the T.A.R.P. bailout and all they are going to produce is clown cars. I don't like clown cars. Here in Texas every thing is big,and that's how we like are cars and trucks, not are women though. Now if they were going to give a rebate on fishing boats,I might consider that incentive.

I have heard that sentiment expressed before - That taxpayers are suddenly supporting the auto companies, but they're not necessarily building the cars that they want to buy.

I think that the overall unrest over that will be influenced by the price at the pumps, although I'm sure Texas folks will still like their large vehicles. ;)

Our fuel prices are coming down here in Texas, and nationwide due to the poor economy, and job loss, the stimulus hasn't worked, our president told us that if he spent all this money that umemployment would not reach 8 percent.it is now over 10 and predicted to reach 11 percent. We can't afford to tax those out of work, even there uneployment checks will be subject to higher taxes to pay for the clunker program.

I am happy to report that I recently took advantage of the cash for clunkers program. My 2003 Kia sedona that got 16 miles to the gallon was traded in for a Spectra that gets 26 in the city and up to 35 on the highway. Not the greatest but its a far cry from the Sedona. I would have loved to have bought a hybrid like the insight of the prius but the cost was way to prohibitive even with the cash back allowance offered by the government in tax credits.

The Kia Sedona is headed to a reclamation yard where it will be dismantled, shredded and turned into raw materials for a new car or a fridge or stove or even an I-beam for a new building.

It has run out of money the first week, only after 4 days.just think what would happen if they gave all the American people a tax break, wow, now thats a stimulis.. These are the same people you want to run your healthcare?
There is NO RECYLCING IN THIS PROGRAM,car parts will not be recycled, that is from a green administration?. Also if you fill out the cash for clunkers over the internet at the usgovt.org,be sure and read the fine fine print that that says "I AGREE TO THESE TERMS". If you agree and click submit, the fine print under the terms of agrrement releases your computer to the U S Govt. Read before you fill it out over your pc. Read it for yourself, cause, who you gonna believe,me or your lyin eyes?? :o

Andre Mitchell-newscaster thinks you have no idea what is good for you,she thinks you are a idiot, hear it for yourself, cause, who you gonna believe,me or your lyin ears?
