Increased amount of Ethanol in gasoline

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says the government should move quickly to increase the amount of ethanol allowed in gasoline.

Ethanol producers asked the Environmental Protection Agency last week to increase the amount of ethanol that refiners can blend with gasoline from a maximum of 10 percent to 15 percent, which could boost the demand for the renewable fuel additive by as much as 6 billion gallons a year. However, automobile and small engine manufacturers have said there's no certainty yet that such an increase will not harm engines and fuel lines.

Running even 10% Ethanol (common these days) will have an impact on your car and reduce its useful life.

Re: Increased amount of Ethanol in gasoline

Definitely I don't want my car broken because too much ethanol in the fuel I use. I think the blending technology (or whatever its name  ) have to be more developed so that they can add more ethanol in fuels without harming cars and reducing their useful life.
What about carbon footprint anyway?

Re: Increased amount of Ethanol in gasoline

The damage comes from the gas parts not being compatible with the ethanol. Rubber and aluminum are specifically susceptible to damage by ethanol. ethanol can also carry electrical current meaning the higher percentages of ethanol will produce more "galvanic corrosion" in the fuel system.

I've definitely heard of Ethanol content in gas, cut I'm not sure what the attraction is to the consumer.

Does a higher Ethanol fuel make a vehicle perform better or faster in the short term?

Re: Increased amount of Ethanol in gasoline

What they need to do is just start the transition and require all engines to be ethanol-capable by 2015 or something. I don't know how far in advance engines are made, but they need to start going in that direction.
