Offshore wind power in great lakes

Celebrating this past Earth Day, New York Power Authority (NYPA) President and Chief Executive Officer Richard Kessel announced a major public-private initiative for the potential development of wind power projects in the New York State waters of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

Good news as (I think) we haven't optimally make good use of wind power which in certain places is available abundantly.

Wind farms can be a bit of a blight on the landscape though and are a danger to birds. I guess everything has a downside. We have many wind farm off shore around the British Isles and more are being built.

That's a good point to consider, Stav. If a wind turbine harms birds, well....I wonder if we can still call it green or eco-friendly. I think one of the downside of a wind turbine is its size; its always big. Do you think it is possible to build a small wind turbine yet producing sufficient energy for a household's need?

I also wonder if there's a way to avoid the problem with the birds, like maybe a source of noise that alerts them to the blades?

It's probably a long shot, but I've heard of devices that make noise on vehicles that supposedly prevent deer from being struck.

i don't know about size Mallard... I guess as the technology improves, then maybe they will get smaller. I think though that the size of the blades bearsa direct relation to the power produced.

I wonder if the issues with birds and the turbines are as severe with units that are located in the water as opposed to on land?

Possibly there wouldn't be as many flocks flying out over the water?

It seems that, over the years, animals will learn what hurts them and stay away from it. OK, well, rabbits hopping across roads; there's the exception that proves the rule .

but most flock birds don't have the intelligence to 'learn' that wind turbines are dangerous.

Taggart you may be right about the ones on water, and it would therefore make sense to build more off shore. As i siad there are many built and being built around the UK.

I didn't even realize they built them in the water. All I've ever seen are the huge fields of turbines out in wide open spaces. It sounds like putting them in the oceans/lakes might be a better compromise, though.

I didn't realize that either, Kitten. It's just amazing what you can learn here. I just wish we could make more practical use of this type of thing in every day life.
