Different Building Materials

I have read a bit about people building their own domes for their homes sometimes use materials such as old, worn-out tires and hay bales for walls and/or insulation. Does anyone have a home like this, or know someone who does? Do you/they like it?

Re: Different Building Materials

I don't know of any examples of homes like that, but your post reminds me of a kind of island that was man-made.

It had plastic soda bottles tied together and I think it may have had earth on it too. This is going back a few years and I saw it on TV, but I thought it was pretty interesting. I think it was mobile as well.

It was about the size of a normal plot of land you'd build a house on.

Re: Different Building Materials

I want one but don't know anybody that has one. Earthships are cool. I am big on different building materials. I think that if it has a structural capability why not use it. Using tires in earthships creates thermal mass that helps reduce the need for heating and cooling, using straw in straw bale homes does the same thing. I personaly am going to make my kids play house out of pallets. I have the design almost complete and access to all the pallets I need.

I'd like to build a whole house but local codes prevent me from doing it. Some day I will live out in the boondocks and be able to do what I want. Someday.

That's a great idea! Would you consider making your design plans public when your finished?

Re: Different Building Materials

after tweeking them and coming up with a final product, Of COURSE... for 1000 a piece. No not really they'll be free. but yes... I just have to tweek the product a bit so it all works. May take some time I haven't got the money for the other materials I want to add. nor do I have the time to do it right now. But when I do I'll provide scans of the plans.
