Halogena Energy Saver Lamps

Halogena Energy Saver halogen lamps by Philips are offered in 40-watt and 70-watt models as alternatives to 60-watt and 100-watt incandescents. The halogen lamps feature a 3,000-hour average rated life and deliver 800 to 1,600 lumens, the same light output as the higher-wattage incandescents, for a 30% energy savings. The bulbs are designed to resemble the look and feel of traditional incandescent bulbs and are also dimmable.

Great Product... However. Several small print Items of note

"Due to the heat that radiates from the bulb, do not use in close proximity to combustible materials
or objects susceptible to drying or fading."

"CAUTION: The filament capsule contained inside this glass bulb is pressurized, operates at high temperature
and could unexpectedly shatter. Should the outer bulb break, particles of extremely hot glass could be discharged
into the fixture and/or the surrounding environment, thereby creating a risk of personal injury or fire."

"To avoid deterioration of lampholder by heat, use only heat resistant lampholders or fixtures listed by a
nationally recognized electrical testing organization for use with reflector or PAR lamps."

"NOTICE: Before using bulb, see operating instructions on inside flap.Adherence to the operating instructions
will reduce the risk of personal injury or fire."

Do you think that these four quotes (taken in no particular order from the link) mean that the bulbs get hot?... I mean DAMN hot.

Yes they use less energy but 90% of the energy they use goes to the generation of heat not to the generation of light. So in effect they really are no more efficient than the incandescents they replace.

Of course what I present costs more but lasts over 20 times longer and produces virtually no heat. The real options begin to be seen when light is turned on to the subject.

DUALLY NOTED! Don't want to overlook the small print. Yikes!

I love the LED bulbs coming to the market and would love to buy one for every lamp I have. They are without question the most efficient artificial light source available. Unfortunately, I'd need to take out a small loan to get them all. ::-(>

Nah... just sell a kidney. Yeah my daughter burned her index finger on a halogen at my wifes old place of employement and we (the wife and I) couldn't figure out why she was screaming bloody murder until we saw the 4 foot blister rising from the end of her finger. Needless to say... Halogens are bad bad bad in my book. Yeah they save energy but at what cost?
