Boric acid as a preservative for bamboo

In my location, many people start considering bamboos as a building material option. To make it more durable, they apply various preservative. The most common used preservative is boric acid. The method is soaking the bamboos in a pressure tank containing boric acid solution.
Do you think boric acid is safe for humans, especially children?

Re: Boric acid as a preservative for bamboo

Though environmentalists doesn't fight against the chemical substance usage, I think we should try our best to avoid it. At least we use it only if it's really necessary.

On page 312 of the National Academy of Sciences' report Pesticides in the Diets of Infants and Children (under the section entitled "Non-dietary Exposure to Pesticides") boric acid is cited as one of the pesticides/fungicides that can induce adverse skin reactions such as contact dermatitis and hyperkeratosis with dermal contact of treated surfaces.
