Anaerobic digester
From Defra - "Anaerobic digestion breaks down organic matter to produce biogas which can be used as a renewable energy source for heat and power, and as a transport fuel. It produces a nutrient-rich digestate which can be used as fertiliser, and importantly it keeps organic waste out of landfill, which cuts greenhouse gas emissions. "
There has recently been a BBC documentary on this pilot scheme on TV. The town of Ludlow had the first one built and it seems that this is working so well at the moment.. They issue households with special biodegradeable bags, which they put all their food waste into, including peelings and rinds etc. These are collected, sent to the digester plant where they are used to produce methane for fuel and fertiliser.
Household food waste is collected by special carts which take it to the plant where the process takes place. The pilot scheme is producing enough power to run 300 homes. If this continues with no major problems it is intended to build these plants all over the country. Do you think it could catch on in your neighbourhood?
