Anaerobic digester

We are currently experimenting with these in several towns around the UK.

From Defra - "Anaerobic digestion breaks down organic matter to produce biogas which can be used as a renewable energy source for heat and power, and as a transport fuel. It produces a nutrient-rich digestate which can be used as fertiliser, and importantly it keeps organic waste out of landfill, which cuts greenhouse gas emissions. "

There has recently been a BBC documentary on this pilot scheme on TV. The town of Ludlow had the first one built and it seems that this is working so well at the moment.. They issue households with special biodegradeable bags, which they put all their food waste into, including peelings and rinds etc. These are collected, sent to the digester plant where they are used to produce methane for fuel and fertiliser.

Household food waste is collected by special carts which take it to the plant where the process takes place. The pilot scheme is producing enough power to run 300 homes. If this continues with no major problems it is intended to build these plants all over the country. Do you think it could catch on in your neighbourhood?

Re: Anaerobic digester

I know that some communities around my home have separate pickup for food waste, but I'm not sure how it's processed.

That sounds like a good program mentioned above.

Re: Anaerobic digester

it's amazing.. and it costs very little once the plant is built. Food waste doesn't go into landfill.. does not produce the harmful gases that contribute to global warming, and we get cheap energy...

Re: Anaerobic digester

There are dairy farms here in the US that are using the technology to power their farm. However I can't give these farms complete approval since the conditions they raise their cattle in are harsh and unfit for any living creature. Warm fuzzies they don't get but they are certainly making progress and that should be acknowledged.

I predict that you will start to see more Digesters popping up like the ones in the UK and as the technology catches on. I hope so at least.

Re: Anaerobic digester

It is proving to be economical and cheap, with widespread benefits, so i think it will catch on UF...here's hoping!
