Nuclear power

The general points we concern about the production and usage of the nuclear power is that the nuclear power should be safe, much more efficient and not producing radioactive waste. While those requirements sounds simple, the ways to meet them is not that simple at all. We have noticed here and there that some nuclear reactors failed to meet the requirements, causing terrible health problems of people living around the place.
Do you think in the future we can significantly increase the nuclear power production without harming people's life?

Re: Nuclear power

I don't see why not. Other nations do. The technology has come a long way in the past 25 years. People need to look into it with an open mind instead of automatically equating nuclear with destruction.

Re: Nuclear power

The US Navy has been using nuclear power on their submarines for decades. I can't recall ever hearing any problems with the reactors on the subs. In fact, they say you're exposed to less radiation on a submerged submarine than you are standing outside on a sunny day.

Re: Nuclear power

I think it will be a very, very long time before we can ever safely produce nuclear energy, if that's even possible. But I don't think the accompanying process will ever be safe. Uranium mining is extremely devastating to ecosystems and nearby communities, and the water used in cooling is often contaminated permanently. So even if you can somehow contain the radiation - which at this point is impossible - you've still got a whole list of other things to worry about, unfortunately. You can check out www.nirs.org for more info.

Re: Nuclear power

No, thank you. We are nowhere near close to being able to use nuclear energy. We need to just leave it alone and move on to wind and solar power, for example.

Re: Nuclear power

I disagree.. Nuclear power is cheap, efficient and much safer now than when first conceived 40 years ago.

It is clean and reliable energy. We need to shake off the old fears and look forward.

Re: Nuclear power

Stav...

We environmentalists are not supposed to believe in Nuclear Energy... Didn't you get the memo? While we all agree that we need to find new sources of energy there are many in the environmentalist movement that believe that Nuclear energy should never be an option because of the waste disposal issue. Well not only the waste... Mining for the materials used in Nuclear Energy leaves large tracts of land inhospitable to life and pollutes surrounding rivers for decades. Much like MTR of coal thousands of cubic feet of mountains are destroyed just for a small amount of Uranium the open pit mines found in Canada, Niger, Namibia and Australia ruin the landscape and kill or displace the wild life while only accounting for 25% of the total worlds production.

Waste handling still remains the 1500 lb gorilla in the room though, because until there is a way to dispose of the spent fuel rods and contaminated waters ect. with out worry of future leaks, thefts, or other threatening concequences of storage we remain at risk. Some also say that Nuclear Energy will keep us from pursuing other energy alternatives because the convenience of Nuclear.

Personaly I Like the Nuclear option. I also think that if we thought outside of the box we could come up with a plan to dispose of the waste... ( I know of a place that would be cheap and actually safe for us to store the waste. yet the idea is too out of the box for most people to consider, let alone think of on their own. Or come up with a way to make it work.) :FLAG:

Re: Nuclear power

when you consider how much disruption drilling for oil, mining for coal etc causes to the environemnt, the disposal of nuclear waste becomes a much smaller issue.

Also, consider how much of the earth is contaminated by landfil just for starters..

besides i think we should dispose of the waste in shortfuses back yard.. he won't mind, so long as he is well paid... it's the American way ;)
