White house veggie garden

First Lady Michelle Obama broke ground on the new vegetable garden at the White House yesterday. Did anyone see her feeble attempt to clear the ground? I understand the Park & Recreation Dept. will not be tending the garden. Is this what you might call a 'shovel ready' project?

I wonder what veggies they'll be growing?

This from the AP:

Spinach, salad greens, herbs and berries are among the crops being planted.

What did you think of the clothes she wore? How was her hair? She might make a "feeble" attempt to clear ground in your eyes, but the important thing to take away from this event is that she was DOING it. I think it's a wonderful example for her to set for anyone with enough space to grow a garden. I also am interested to see what kind of veggies and herbs the White House garden will produce; will they be served at state dinners?

As always, Mrs. Obama looked fabulous! There's no question that I think she is setting a great example for everyone who has the opportunity to plant their own veggie garden. I just think that may have been the first time she's ever held a shovel. :P:

Well, she is a city girl! ;)
It's good training for the girls to get into gardening as well, while they're young. I remember digging a garden with my granny when I was just a little thing. I even jabbed her arm with a three-pronged hoe, but she forgave me.

We who are of the greener kind may get sick of staged photo opportunities, but the greater public out there still needs to see this stuff. Either to get a clue about what's going on, and/or to see what is possible, these are valuable events. The First Lady could be sitting in the White House drinking tea or checking out her pearls, as some earlier First Ladies have done. I admire her getting out there and promoting important stuff.

Re: White house veggie garden

but wasn't this tale of a white house veggie patch actually someting that was happening when Dubya was still living there? Seem to remember some drivel about how he was turning over part of the White House lawn for vegetables.. I also seem to recall he was widely ridiculed over it... But now that the blessed Obamas are doing it, it's a 'good thing'

Double standards?

Not anti Obama or pro Bush by the way... just a cynical brit...
