Check out the City Dump

I'm sure there's another, newer phrase, but I'll leave it as city dump  . Anyway, our local one (in Lane County, OR) is having a Saturday special that they run a few times every year. You can bring all your stuff you're not supposed to throw in the dumpster, such as oil, batteries, computer parts, etc, and they will take them off your hands free of charge. This gives me the chance to get rid of a few shoe boxes of old batteries, not have to pay a fee, and feel pretty smug about myself for the afternoon.
I'm understanding that lots of dumps are doing this now. Why not see if your local is doing this program.

We went to our "hazardous waste disposal event" taking a couple of years worth of batteries. It took us about five minutes waiting behind a couple of cars, and we were done. The event folks told us that the larger county dump takes all hazardous waste for free all the time. Check it out with your county dumps and they can give you good info.

In one town I lived, the trash pickup service actually did this about twice a year. They'd have a day where you could set out items that weren't normally to be thrown away, and they'd come by and pick them up as part of the normal route.

In the place where I live it is the thing are dumped first and then sorted out by people employed by the dumpyard who then sort the hazardous and the non hazardous things...it is actually silly and quite dangerous for the people who do the job.

Re: Check out the City Dump

A friend of mine works in various neighborhoods early in the morning and has scored some excellent finds from people throwing good items out.

I'm not sure if he's actually went to the dump to get things, but I'm sure there are great opportunities there.

Over here, stuff like batteries and other hazardous waste is accepted by all our recycling centres free of charge all the time... I save mine up, (yes also in a shoebox) and take them over with other stuff like old clothing every couple of months or so...

Re: Check out the City Dump

I'm doing some housecleaning and I have some old electronics that doesn't work. I think I've seen stores accepting these, but I forget where I was.

Is there typically a solution for disposing of old broken electronics like Walkman CD players?

I'm thinking there's a better solution than the dump. ;)

Re: Check out the City Dump

there are places that will take old electronics over here.. and many charities are always grateful for old but still working stuff. There are companies that recycle the precious metals found inside old computers for instance.

Re: Check out the City Dump

I recently took some renovation waste materials to the transfer station, but I didn't notice anything I'd want to try to reuse.

Speaking of dumps, our city's currently experiencing a strike that's resulted in garbage being dumped in city parks. What a nightmare.

Re: Check out the City Dump

Tag,

Thats terrible. Trash in the local park sucks. I hope that the trash collectors are given the things that they want so that they can get back to the task at hand. (Most of them are under paid anyway so I support their strike) but I also hope that the citizens of your community will realize that dumping trash in the park only hurts them in the long run and that if they were truely concerned about their trash pick up they would join the trash collectors on the picket lines and at the barganing tables to try to bring a quick end to the situation. My op of course.
