Newspaper End Rolls

End rolls are the surplus paper left on the roll after the paper roll gets too small for the printing press. Check with your local newspaper for information about purchasing the end rolls that can be used for all kinds things. One end roll can last years for children's arts & crafts and even makes a good wrapping paper.
Accept the things you cannot change but change the things you can.

Re: Newspaper End Rolls

This reminds me of a cat litter product for cats recovering from surgery. It's called "Yesterday's News" and it's made from compressed newspaper.

Our vet said it was a good idea because newsprint is virtually sterile. I'm not sure why that is.

Re: Newspaper End Rolls

I've heard of Yesterday's News, but never actually tried it myself. I actually have a surplus of newspaper already, so I could use some more ideas of how to use it all up!

Re: Newspaper End Rolls

The end rolls don't actually have print on them so they make good paper for children's artwork and crafts. I have a three year old that loves to paint and I've had the same roll for over a year. I just tear a piece off the end roll and clip it to his easel and he's all set. We'll also paint and decorate large pieces of paper to use for creative wrapping paper.

As for your old printed newspapers, you could find out whether your town or city offers a curbside newspaper recycling program. If not, there are many ways you can re-use it.. For example, newspaper makes a good mulch for a garden. Simply lay out the sections, overlapping them in a heavy mat around plants and then just cover the paper with a compost mixture. This is a great way to keep the weeds out and keep moisture in for your plants.

Maybe there should be a new thread just about how to recycle newspapers. ;)

That's an interesting idea to utilize the newspaper end rolls. It will benefit both the newspaper or printing companies and us. We can get cheap price for them, right? Being green is easy as well as profitable :)

Re: Newspaper End Rolls

That's a great idea. I remember going on a paper drive when I was a Boy Scout. That was before there were so many recycling programs.

Also I wonder if this will become less of an opportunity to take advantage of as more and more newspapers shut down?
