Recycle for Charity

We have a new website here in the UK where you can send old toner cartridges free to these people and they are sold on to companies that can recycle and reuse them... all the prceeds going to charity.

Sounds like a great idea.. Is there anything like this near you?

Nothing like that in St. Louis. It is a good idea though. Americans aren't big on the idea though. (most not all let me qualify that statement so as to not offend thanks)

Yes, I've seen little set-ups where you can drop your toner cartridge in the slot. I think it goes to the Lions club, for children's eyeglasses. A worthwhile charity.

I don't think I've seen that service in Canada, but there are options of refilling them and reusing the cartridges. I guess that's probably pretty widespread.

Our youth group kids have had aluminum can drives (for their pizza fund ;) ) and newspaper drives. We also have an "environmental minute" near the end of our meetings, where we try to present them with some fun and interesting green things they can do. They loved the one about re-using coffee grounds.

I took part in a paper drive when I was a kid. I assume they're still happening here, but I haven't heard about one lately. Maybe they're less popular with the increased recycling programs?

I see people collecting beer bottles along the side of highways for the deposit. Also in the area, some stretches of highways are "adopted" or "sponsored" by businesses that commit to keeping them clean. There are signs up to let you know who's looking after them.

I forgot to say that the Lions have set-ups where you can recycle your old glasses. They use the frames for glasses for people who can't afford new ones. I don't know if they can do anything with the lenses. If they can use them, I think they would.

The local St Vincent de Paul have coat drives before the weather gets too cold, to give to kids and adults. You would not believe the pile of coats they receive. The St Vinnie's in other cities also do the same thing.

Speaking of charity, I notice that there is still a food donation bin at our supermarket. I think I first became aware of it around the December holiday season, but I also hear that the current economic problems have had an effect on food bank donations, too.
