Recycled Computers: Free to those in need

With computer prices at an all time low, we've come to a point where computer hardware is disposable and it seems like everyone is interested in conservation and recycling these old computer parts. There does't seem to be enough recycling places to meet the demand and, thanks to the lead and glass in CRT monitors, they are very expensive to ship leaving them to collect dust in your closet or basement. Before you put your CRT or old PC on the curb look into some other alternatives. There are some amazing organizations out there working hard to reuse your old computer parts. Places like Free Geek in Portland take donated computer parts to create usable systems for people that would otherwise not be able to afford one. It's likely someone in your area is already doing something similar to Free Geek so.. Let's get the word out for these organizations and inform our members who (and where) they are in your area.

Speaking of computers on the curb, I've definitely seen monitors there with signs on them encouraging someone to take them and use them. I don't know what the success rate of that kind of recycling is though.

It's good to know how to avoid disposing of usable hardware.

Computers for Schools is non-profit organization in Chicago that accepts private and corporate computer donations, refurbishes the equipment, and makes them available to schools and other nonprofits, both in the city and the suburbs. They have free pickup of 10 computers or more in the Chicago Area. Computers are refurbished on-site, and unusable equipment is recycled. They are looking for Pentium III 600 MHz or better and all types of accessory equipment.

My office changes it's PCs every two years and we donate the old ones to this organisation which sends them to schools in Africa. We send about 45 every two years as well as a dozen laptops. :JUMP:

Re: Recycled Computers: Free to those in need

Those are very worthy causes for old computers.
I know that my hubby (and he doesn't know that I know) when he upgrades the computers, he mostly hides the old stuff away, for the day when they will be museum pieces or suchlike. I know that he has two Commodore 64s packed away in a box; I think it will become years until any museum wants them. Maybe he's saving them for the grandchildren, and I can just see their faces: "Oh, um, thanks grandpapa...er, just what I always, um...wanted..." while their minds are thinking, "Just what the Hell am I going to do with this??!!!"

while some limited edition ones with special rare packaging are worth a few bucks.. the basic commodore 64, even with all its original packaging and manuals etc isn't worth anything really.. There were just too many of them made.

I assume that the companies that take the old computers would also take old separate components like RAM sticks or cables, etc.?

I don't have a computer I want to part with, but I have some old pieces like that.

Oh dear, don't let my husband hear about that. He has two C64s all packed up in the closet. He tells me that someday they will be worth alot of money, maybe help send a grandkid or two to college...It's my opinion he just dearly loved his old C64s and couldn't bear giving them away. He said the CPUs purred like cats  .
