Say yes to plastic.

That statement goes totaly against my beliefs but I had to say it. You see there is something to be said about plastic that I try to deny but unfortunately I can't. Plastic bags from your favorite grocery store are the bain of my existance. They tear, get caught in trees during wind storms and kill Turtles out in the big briney and so I don't like them. However I found a person who makes purses, messanger bags and other things from the plastic that you get to carry your purchases home from the store. After finding her ad on Craigslist.org I had to research the Idea. Interestingly enough the process is fairly simple and quite fun. I made a coupon holder out of the plastic that wraps bulk Capri Sun boxes and recently I showed my daughter, who up until that point, thought the idea was dumb. After seeing the coupon holder she was onboard and thought it would be cool to have a clutch for her makeup and ID. So having been given a black Hot topic bag to work with I made her a clutch. Can I just stop right now and say I Like IT. Yeah if it weren't so girlie I might think about having one. I think I'm going to see if I can make a tri-fold with a divider from a Coke lable. Anyway heres a youtube video that shows a messanger bag being made. I'll try to post a picture of my daughters clutch if I can pry it from her grubbly little paws. Still, if you can, say no to plastic when ever asked but if you have to then make something useful out of the plastic you bring home.

Great post urban forager! Very informative. If there is a way to use plastic to save waste, we at Ityse are all for that. Another option instead of using any plastic at all in the grocery store is reusable bags. We prefer mesh bags to the typical cloth ones because mesh can hold more, is easier to wash, and compacts to fit in smaller spaces. Thanks for the great video!

Re: Say yes to plastic.

It definitely sounds like a neat way to re-use a material, but it seems a tad complicated. If you're into the whole arts and crafts aspect, this sounds like a GREAT pet project, but I'm not very creative. lol. :P

Honestly, if I ever get plastic bags from my grocery store, I always save them and re-use them anyway. My only question about THESE bags would be concerning the durability. Yes, they say they're durable, but I think that goes from person to person. I have a friend who enjoys doing stuff like this so perhaps I'll send the video off to her. Thanks for sharing. :)
People have often told me that I have an unhealthy relationship with my thermostat, but they're WRONG. XP
