Solar Water Disinfection (SODIS)

I think it is the simplest examples of utilizing solar energy. Solar Water Disinfection improves the microbiological quality of drinking water. This method uses solar radiation to destroy pathogenic microorganisms which cause water borne diseases.

It is suitable to treat small quantities of water. Contaminated water is filled into transparent plastic bottles and exposed to full sunlight for six hours. That simple. Sunlight is treating the contaminated water through two synergistic mechanisms: radiation in the spectrum of UV-A and increased water temperature. If the water temperatures raises above 50°C, the disinfection process is three times faster.

That's great information Rummy. That method could apply to anyone in a survival situation too. I'm not clear whether it's the sunlight, heat, or a combination of both that actually disinfects the water?

Well, reading the description, I guess it is a combination of both. It is mentioned that radiation in the spectrum of UV-A and increased water temperature work synergistically in treating the contaminated water. In my location, we can buy drinking water which treated by applying UV light on it (and other process like filtering etc).

I wonder if the Survivorman knows about this?

It proved that utilizing solar energy is not always expensive. I think we focus too much on converting solar energy to electrical energy, while it can be converted to many kind of usable energy like thermal energy (it doesn't even need to be converted; solar energy is thermal already).

If you are still interested, just take a look at USEPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency).
There you´ll find a lot of academic stuff regarding the method of SODIS.

Re: Solar Water Disinfection (SODIS)

can't water be heated in solar devices like the solar cooker...I think the process of disinfecting will be faster....because of the way these devices have contraptions to concentrate the sunrays at a particular point.
