Space based Solar Array.

I just watched a program on "Planet Green" where as the people in the program were trying to demonstrate the potental of a orbital solar array to collect and provide solar energy to the earth.

The problem-- transfering the energy from space to earth with little to no loss and at the same time using the least amount of energy possible to do it.

The solution-- Microwaves. and since space is void of anything that would reduce or disrupt the signal the issue begins only when the signal needs to travel the last 60 miles through the atmosphere. Well the show highlighted tests they conducted that show the signal can be sent through the last 60 miles of its journey. However what they found was that even though the signal could travel the last 60 miles and maintain most of its strength it was hard to focus. However it is possible and that is a good thing. Solar arrays placed in space to collect energy and send it to earth could very well solve many of the worlds problems when it comes to energy usage and creation.

Fascinating stuff. Technology is moving forward so fast, i am sure that they will solve the diffusion problem soon.

Re: Space based Solar Array.

It is an interesting thought.

I'd really like to know the potential results of something going wrong in that last 60 miles to earth, though. This is a totally new concept to me, but think of Three Mile Island and then imagine living beside a "receiving station" for this kind of energy.

Re: Space based Solar Array.

What about building a power transfer cable into a space elevator. For a space elevator to function, a cable with one end attached to the Earth's surface would need to extend upwards, reaching beyond geosynchronous orbit, at 21,700 miles (35,000-kilometer altitude). After that, simple physics takes charge and the cable becomes stationary. Wouldn't it make sense to deploy the orbital solar array at the end of the cable and use the cable to transfer the power back to earth? I think that would be much more efficient than sending microwaves back to earth.

Re: Space based Solar Array.

That sounds ok Verde until you consider the signal loss as a result of the distance traveled. Microwave technologies appear to be so much more effective because they only encounter issues with signal loss in the last 64 miles due to atmospheric resistance. Think of DSL internet as an example... the closer you are to the server the better your speed, the further away you get the weaker the signal and the lower your potential speed. Same thing applies to running a "cable out to space to transfer energy... Plus if you build a solar array in space and transfer power by microwave you can send that power anywhere in the world so long as you place it far enough out that it is stationary to the earths rotation. (nongeosyncronis orbit.)

This does sound fascinating. What we need is some real dedicated focus on finding a way. We can do it; it just takes time and funding.

Re: Space based Solar Array.

besides wouldn't a cable then be subject to all the vagaries of weather etc? Or things crashing into it? Birds, planes etc...

I would think that with the technology available we can manage to transmit power 'wirelessly'
