Vertical-axis or horizontal-axis wind turbines

Two primary design of wind turbines is vertical-axis and horizontal axis. Now vertical-axis are pretty rarely applied. In a vertical-axis wind turbine, the shaft is mounted on a vertical axis, perpendicular to the ground. It is always aligned with the wind, so there's no adjustment necessary when the wind direction changes; but a VAWT needs a boost from its electrical system to get started. The other drawback is that it need a larger space for the turbine because all equipment is at ground level for easy installation and servicing.

Re: Vertical-axis or horizontal-axis wind turbines

I don't think I've ever heard of or seen a vertical axis wind turbine.

In the last few years there have been about a dozen or two of the traditional kind erected along Highway 10 in Ontario, south of Owen Sound.
