Wind Power From Kites

Experiments are under way to generate wind power from kites. Wind power from kites or other objects suspended in air are not new, but have been mostly ignored for decades. These precursors to wind power generators were simple affairs that generated small amounts of power. Today, prompted by climate change and the need for cheap, clean electricity, they can generate upwards of 10 Megawatts per kite, with larger wind power kite farms projected to generate 100 Megawatts or more. In fact, current projects claim that a single farm, or array of wind power kites, could generate the same electrical output as a Nuclear power plant.

Re: Wind Power From Kites

I never even heard of using kites to generate power. How exactly can a kite produce that much power?

I appears like they attach several kites in an array with a turbines attached to each kite. I imagine you could add as many kites/turbines as you wanted to increase the amount of power generated. They keep the kites at a very high elevation where the wind is constant.

Wow, that looks wonderful. How to guarantee that the kites keep flying? I mean, well, they are set at a high elevation that the wind is constant. But, isn't it possible that sometimes the kites will lack of wind and they fly down and break the turbines?

I wonder about the possibility of them falling down, too. Do you think that these kites would be less of a threat to birds than the larger wind turbines?

I have never seen kites in use like this.

It is surely an innovative concept although I have not seen anything like this before....is there a city where this thing has been used?

They claim they can generate as much power as a nuclear facility! I wonder what the people who are opposed to the giant wind turbines will think of this technology. Who doesn't like to fly kites?

I am glad you asked that because that question had been bothering me too. Would it be possible to have these kites over the sea?
