Wind Turbine Fields

Have you seen fields of large wind turbines in your area?

I know of one about a couple hours north of the city that has dozens of them, and there's another site being proposed off the shore, but there are people opposed to it for the sake of the appearance. I'll be interested to see how that goes.

Re: Wind Turbine Fields

I live in an area where wind is a factor in our life every day. During storms, the wind can run to excess of 70 mph. It is beyond me why there are no wind turbine fields around. I know that alot of town honchos (who don't have any money in them) say that wind turbines ruin the view, but they don't seem to mind a bit of timber clear-cutting, so I don't know the answer. If I were an entrepreneur, I'd start up a field immediately.

Re: Wind Turbine Fields

yes they are rather ugly, but they are also a hazard to birds... it would be good if they could find a away to keep birds away from them. They are a useful and economical source of power, and considering the world's energy needs which are constantly increasing, i can't see how we can avoid them.

Re: Wind Turbine Fields

The only turbines I've ever seen don't spin very fast. I assume it all depends on the wind at the time but do you really think birds can't maneuver around the turbines?

Re: Wind Turbine Fields

I think the people who are placing the importance of the visual effect over the benefits of saving energy should reconsider.

And as for the birds, I've heard the concern before and I think that's a valid point too, but I'm also a little surprised that the ones I've seen would be a threat, moving at the speeds they do.

Re: Wind Turbine Fields

well i've seen them whizzing along so fast that the air around them hums...

i don't think it is just that they can't avoid them, i think it has something to do with wind turbulence knocking out their 'radar'..
